The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between self-esteem and social competence levels among university students. The research was conducted using a relational survey model, one of the non-experimental quantitative research methods. The study group consisted of 264 university students studying at the Faculty of Sport Sciences at Süleyman Demirel University, with a mean age of 20.6±2.0 years. Data were collected using a Personal Information Form, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and the Social Self-Efficacy Scale. Descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Bonferroni post hoc test, and Pearson correlation analysis were used for data analysis. The findings revealed a positive, low-level, but statistically significant relationship between self-esteem and social competence. While no significant differences were found in self-esteem scores according to gender, social competence levels were significantly higher in female students compared to males. No significant differences in self-esteem were observed based on the department of study or class level; however, significant differences were found in social competence scores, particularly in favor of students enrolled in the coaching department and those in higher class levels. Additionally, analyses based on age groups indicated no significant differences in self-esteem, whereas social competence levels differed significantly, favoring students in the middle age group. In conclusion, the results suggest that self-esteem is an important factor associated with social competence among university students. Enhancing students’ self-esteem may contribute to more effective social interactions and improved social functioning. Therefore, it is recommended that higher education institutions implement psychosocial and educational programs aimed at strengthening students’ self-esteem and social competence skills.
