Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of perceived aesthetic design of shopping environments on individuals’ recreational participation time and to investigate the mediating role of emotional pleasure in this relationship. The study was conducted using a quantitative research approach within a cross-sectional and correlational research design. The sample consisted of 235 individuals who voluntarily participated in the study and visited shopping environments located in the city of Isparta, Türkiye. Data were collected through a questionnaire including scales measuring perceived aesthetic design, emotional pleasure, and recreational participation time. Descriptive statistics, reliability and normality analyses, and Pearson correlation analysis were performed to analyze the data. The relationships among variables and the mediating role of emotional pleasure were tested using PROCESS Macro Model 4 developed by Hayes (2018). The findings revealed that perceived aesthetic design was positively and significantly associated with both emotional pleasure and recreational participation time. Moreover, the results of the bootstrap mediation analysis indicated that emotional pleasure played a significant mediating role in this relationship. Accordingly, it was concluded that the aesthetic design features of shopping environments have both direct and indirect effects on individuals’ tendency to spend longer time in these spaces. The study provides important implications for understanding shopping environments as social spaces that offer recreational experiences.
